Welcome To The Park CCE

The internet can be viewed as a vast educational resource. The internet also provides the following:

  • a place to discuss topics with like minded people
  • a forum where you can pose questions
  • an entertainment centre

But how do you find websites that are presently unknown to you? That's where search engines come in. Here is a list:

  • Infoseek - Infoseek will search on phrases and not just keywords. Most Relevant" results in Internet World reviews. See Help file with advice on search strategies (Also searchable directly - See above)
  • Excite Search - Also searches based on "concept analysis" rather than just keyword searching. Also provides ratings, indexes, reference databases.
  • WebCrawler - Early search engine, now from GNN/AOL
  • Lycos - From Carnegie Melon: Fast, comprehensive, slick interface
  • Open Text Index - Recently expanded
  • Point Search
  • Inktomi - Search technology research at Berkeley
  • Hotbot - Sophisticated search site based on Inktomi engine: Claims most comprehensive searches on Internet

Search Strategies

Web Search Strategies, by Bryan Pfaffenberger (MIS Press, 1996) is a recommended resource. Also connect online to the associated site, Search Me!, including reviews and ratings of research and reference sites.

One of the best survey's of search strategies, including specific hints for working with each of the major search engines on the net, is in the October, 1996, issue of PC Computing, "The Search is Over," Pg. 143. The same material can also be accessed at PC Computing's Internet site.

An entertaining yet informative survey of online searching, including comparisons of search engines as well as tips and suggestions, is online at C|NET: "Can You Trust Your Search Engine?"

Excite provides an excellent discussion of search technologies at http://www.excite.com/ice/tech.html
